Hatsu is a fishing district on the coast of Okagaki, a town in northern Fukuoka Prefecture between Kitakyushu and Fukuoka city, facing the Hibiki-nada sea. Okagaki promotes itself with the slogan the town where sea turtles come back, and its northern shore, centred on the Sanri Matsubara pine forest, is protected for its natural coastline; loggerhead turtles still come ashore to nest. Behind the beach the town has grown into a commuter suburb for both cities, but the coast keeps a rural feel, with the small Hatsu fishing port at its western end and the hills of the Munakata range rising behind. The town is known for fruit growing, including loquats, grapes and mandarins. This live camera, run by the Okagaki tourism association, looks out over Hatsu beach and the sea; the frame is dark at night, when only the lights along the shore show. The Hibiki-nada is open to the north-west, so winter monsoon winds raise waves that local surfers use, while summer is usually calm enough for swimming. The town's community bus runs a Hatsu line from the centre, and the nearest station is Ebitsu on the JR Kagoshima Main Line. Check the wind direction and wave height on this page.
