Umegahama is a beach in the town area of Nichinan, the city in the far south of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu, a few minutes from the harbour of Aburatsu. Aburatsu is the historic port of the Obi domain, and its stone bridges, shrines and the station of the JR Nichinan Line sit just inland from the beach. Nichinan is warmer than most of mainland Japan, with an average annual temperature of about 18.4 °C, and the coast here belongs to the Nichinan Coast with its wooded headlands and small bays. The beach looks east across the Pacific between headlands, so it gathers swell from typhoons and from winter lows passing to the south, and National Route 220 runs along the shore with a bus stop named after the beach.
