Koigaura is a remote surf beach in Kushima, the southernmost city of Miyazaki Prefecture, on the coast just north of Cape Toi, where the Pacific meets Shibushi Bay and the Hyuga-nada. The cape is famous for its semi-wild Misaki horses, descended from cavalry horses the Takanabe domain grazed here in the Edo period and now a national natural monument, and for the grasslands and cycad colony around its lighthouse. The whole area lies in the Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park, and Koigaura and the nearby island of Kojima are nesting grounds for loggerhead turtles, so parts of the beach deserve care in the summer nesting season. A wooden sign at the viewpoint above the beach reads Koigaura in Japanese and English. The beach faces the open ocean and is well known among surfers for powerful waves when typhoon or low-pressure swell arrives; it is a long way from the cities and has few facilities.
