Known as the Maracanã of Brazilian surfing, this beach two hours east of Rio has hosted world-tour contests for years. Itaúna faces the open South Atlantic and picks up south and south-east swells, which break powerfully near the rocks below the church on the point. Autumn and winter fronts bring the best waves. Northerly winds blow offshore.
