A long, powerful right-hander breaking over a flat slab of reef at the mouth of the River Thurso, on Scotland's far north coast. It needs a big north or north-west swell and a southerly wind, and when it lines up it is one of the best waves in Europe. The water is cold and stained brown by peat from the river. Experienced surfers only: the reef is shallow.
