Sydney's classic surf beach, a long sweep of sand on the northern side of the harbour entrance, reached by ferry from Circular Quay. Beach breaks shift along its length, from Queenscliff in the north to South Steyne, and pick up most east and south-east swells. Westerly winds blow offshore. It is friendly for learners on small days, patrolled by lifeguards and busy year-round.
