Saint-Jean-de-Luz is the one properly sheltered bay on the French Basque coast. Three breakwaters, built across its mouth in the nineteenth century at Socoa, the Artha and Sainte-Barbe, stop the Atlantic swell, so the Grande Plage in front of the town is a calm crescent of sand where children can swim on days when the open beaches nearby are closed by surf. Across the water lies Ciboure and the Fort de Socoa, and behind the town rises La Rhune, the mountain on the Spanish border. The calm is relative: on a big winter swell the sea breaks heavily on the outer breakwaters, and well offshore lies Belharra, a reef that produces some of the largest waves in Europe on a few days a year. Inside the bay it is a beach for swimming, paddleboarding and sailing dinghies rather than surfing. The sea runs from about 13 °C in late winter to around 22 °C at the end of summer. There is no webcam on the Grande Plage yet, so the wind forecast and sea temperature below are the best way to judge a beach day.

No webcam here. Closest live cam we know of: Playa de La Concha (San Sebastián) (28 km).
