A long white-sand beach running east from the foot of Mauao, the extinct volcano at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour. The main beach picks up north and north-east swells, and a man-made reef was once built offshore to improve the banks. Southerly winds blow offshore. It is one of New Zealand's most popular beaches, warm by local standards, with good conditions for learning on small days.
