Sainte-Maxime lies on the northern shore of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, looking south across the water to Saint-Tropez itself, and the shuttle boats that cross the gulf leave from its harbour. The town beach runs along the seafront next to the port and the Tour Carrée, a sixteenth-century tower that now houses a museum, and it is a sandy, gently shelving beach that suits families. Because the gulf opens to the east and the Massif des Maures rises behind the town, the beach is relatively sheltered from the Mistral; easterly winds are the ones that bring waves into the gulf, and summer afternoons often have a light sea breeze that is good for paddleboarding and small sailing boats. The water is generally calm, clear and warmer than on the open coast, from roughly 13 °C in February to around 24 °C in August. In high season the beach is busy and the seafront road is lined with restaurants. The webcam is a Windy timelapse over the town beach, with the harbour and the gulf in view.
