Wenningstedt sits on the west coast of Sylt, Germany's northernmost island, between Westerland to the south and Kampen to the north. The beach runs below a line of high dunes and faces straight into the open North Sea, so it picks up the same swell as the rest of the island's west side. Wind and waves arrive mostly from the west, and on the rare days with an easterly breeze the water cleans up and the sandbanks can give a proper surf session. On a westerly gale the shore break turns heavy and the currents that run along the beach get strong; swimmers should stay inside the lifeguarded sections, which are staffed in the summer season. North of the village the coast rises into the Red Cliff, one of the best-known landmarks of the island. Wenningstedt itself is quieter than Westerland, with a short promenade, beach access paths through the dunes and the Denghoog, a Stone Age passage grave in the middle of the village. The North Sea stays cool here: the sea temperature is at its highest in August and drops below 10 °C from about December to April.
