Pittulongu is the beach closest to Olbia, a few kilometres north of the city on the road to Golfo Aranci, and for many people arriving by ferry or plane in north-east Sardinia it is the first swim of the holiday. It is a long curve of fine sand facing east, with clear, shallow water and a view straight across to the limestone block of Tavolara, the island that gives its name to the Tavolara–Punta Coda Cavallo marine protected area. Several smaller beaches follow one another along this stretch, and the area has a mix of holiday homes, bars and a few beach clubs. Because it faces east, the mistral blows offshore here and leaves the water close to the shore calm, though the wind can still be strong and pushes inflatables out to sea; easterly winds bring waves onto the sand. In summer it is a busy, easy beach for families and paddleboarders, and quiet outside the season. Sea temperature is about 14 °C in late winter and around 25 °C in August.
