Spot info

  • Town: Santa Cruz Huatulco, Oaxaca
  • Water: Sea
  • Sports: SUP

Santa Cruz is the busiest of the Bahías de Huatulco, the string of bays on the Oaxaca coast that Mexico's tourism agency FONATUR began developing as a resort in the 1980s. The usual count is nine bays and more than thirty beaches, many of them inside the Huatulco National Park, and Santa Cruz is where most visits start: it has the cruise ship pier, the marina and the small village of Santa Cruz, and the boat tours to the other bays leave from here. The beach itself is a sheltered curve of sand at the back of the bay with restaurants along it. Headlands on both sides keep out most of the Pacific swell, so the water is usually calm enough to swim and snorkel off the rocks at the ends, although boats come and go all day near the pier. The live cam on this page, from Webcams de México, looks down on the bay from the hillside, showing the beach, the pier and any ship alongside. The dry season runs from November to May; summer brings heat, rain and the risk of tropical storms. The sea stays warm all year, from about 27 °C to 30 °C.
