Paal 9 is a beach on the south-west coast of Texel, near the village of Den Hoorn, where the dunes of the Texel Dunes National Park meet a wide North Sea beach. It is quieter than the beaches at De Koog, with a beach pavilion at the end of the road through the dunes and long stretches of empty sand to the north and south. The live webcam, from the island's tourist information network, looks over the beach and the surf, and its title singles out the waves and the surfing here. The beach faces west-south-west, so the prevailing westerly and south-westerly winds blow onshore and the North Sea swell rolls in over sandbanks, giving some of the more consistent waves on the island; easterly winds blow offshore and clean the waves up, which is when the surf is at its best. Strong currents run along the coast and out through the gaps between the banks, and towards the southern tip of the island they are pulled by the tide in the Marsdiep channel, so swimming should stay close to the pavilion and the guarded area in the season.
