Portugal's largest coastal lagoon, just north of Peniche, with wide areas of shallow, flat water. The summer nortada (N–NW) blows reliably from June to September, making it one of the best kite and windsurf schools on the Silver Coast and a freestyle playground. At low tide sandbanks break the surface, and near the mouth at Foz do Arelho the tidal current is strong and dangerous.
