Strand sits on the north-eastern corner of False Bay, about 50 km south-east of central Cape Town, between Somerset West and Gordon's Bay in the Helderberg area. The name is simply Afrikaans for "beach", and the long sandy shore below Beach Road is the reason the town exists: it grew in the 18th and 19th centuries as a fishing and holiday settlement for families from the Stellenbosch district, and was called Somerset Strand until 1937. Behind the sand rise the Helderberg and Hottentots-Holland mountains, and the Lourens River reaches the sea at the northern end. The beach webcam is run by the Strand Bodyboard Collective with Cape Ocean Adventures and looks straight out over the bay; its overlay shows wind, gusts, tide and swell, and on the evening it was checked several kitesurfers were out in front of the camera. Bodyboarders and surfers use the beach breaks along the front when a swell wraps into False Bay. The Cape has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and most rain in winter. Strand is the end of Metrorail's Northern Line and is reached by road on the N2 and R44, with the Pavilion precinct and the Time for Peace clock tower on the beachfront.
