Spot info

  • Town: Filey, North Yorkshire
  • Water: Sea
  • Sports: SUP

Filey is a quiet Victorian resort on the North Yorkshire coast between Scarborough and Bridlington, and its great asset is the beach: around five miles of firm, flat sand curving south from the long rocky finger of Filey Brigg to the chalk cliffs towards Speeton and Bempton. The Brigg shelters the northern end of Filey Bay from northerly winds and swell, so the water in front of the town is often calm, and the gently sloping sand makes it one of the safer family bathing beaches on this coast, with lifeguards in the summer season. Fishing boats called cobles are still launched by tractor from the Coble Landing at the north end of the promenade. On bigger north-easterly swells waves break near the Brigg and along the bay, and a westerly wind is offshore, but Filey is first of all a beach for walking, rock pooling on the Brigg at low tide, and long days on the sand. Watch the tide on the Brigg, which floods quickly. The North Sea is fresh here: about 14–15 °C in late summer and close to 6–7 °C in February. The live beach webcam shows the bay from above the town; the wind forecast and sea temperature for Filey are below.
