A small beach town north of San Diego with sand-bottom peaks from 15th Street up to the San Dieguito river mouth, where the river's sandbar can shape a good wave. It is open to west and north-west swell in winter and south swell in summer, with easterly winds offshore; mornings are cleanest, before the sea breeze. Consistent, fairly relaxed by Southern California standards, and busy at weekends.
