Spot info

  • Town: Byron Bay, New South Wales
  • Water: Sea
  • Sports: SurfSUP
  • Best wind directions: SSESSE

Main Beach is the town beach of Byron Bay, in far northern New South Wales, directly in front of the town centre and the Byron Bay surf club. Unusually for the east coast it faces north, because it sits in the bay that curves west from Cape Byron, the most easterly point of mainland Australia. That orientation makes it one of the few beaches in the region where the prevailing south-east trade wind blows offshore, so Main Beach and the waves along the bay to the east, such as Clarkes Beach and the long right-hand point at The Pass, are where surfers head when everywhere else is onshore. Main Beach itself is a gentle sand-bottom break on most days, popular with learners and longboarders, and it needs a reasonable east or north-east swell to wrap in. The Pass is a crowded, high-traffic wave with a strict etiquette. The central section is patrolled by lifesavers; swim between the flags. Winter often brings the best combination of swell and offshore wind. See the surf report and water temperature below.
