Coogee is a sheltered, crescent-shaped beach about eight kilometres south-east of Sydney's city centre, between the rock platforms of Dolphin Point to the north and Trenerry Reserve to the south. Wedding Cake Island, a low rock about 800 metres offshore, takes much of the energy out of the swell before it reaches the sand, so Coogee is usually one of the calmest beaches on the eastern suburbs coast. That makes it better for swimming, snorkelling and stand-up paddling than for surfing: the shore break only becomes worth a look in a solid east or south-east swell, and experienced surfers sometimes paddle out to the reef at Wedding Cake Island itself on big days. At Coogee, westerly winds blow offshore. The town end has ocean pools at both ends of the beach, including the Ross Jones Memorial Pool and, around the southern point, Wylie's Baths and the McIver's Ladies Baths. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk finishes here. Lifesavers patrol the beach; swim between the flags. Use the forecast below for wind, wave height and water temperature.
