Merewether is the main surf beach of Newcastle, about 160 kilometres north of Sydney, a south-east-facing stretch of sand below the suburb of Merewether with the large Merewether Ocean Baths at its northern end. Newcastle has a strong surfing history, and Merewether is where four-time world champion Mark Richards grew up surfing. The beach takes swell from the east, south-east and south, and it has several distinct waves: beach-break peaks along the sand, and reef breaks at the southern end around the rock platform known locally as the Ladies and the Ledge, which are powerful, shallow and only for experienced surfers. Westerly and north-westerly winds blow offshore, which means the classic Newcastle surf report is a winter morning with a southerly groundswell and a light westerly. The prevailing summer north-easterly blows onshore here. The Ocean Baths are free to use and are among the largest ocean pools in the Southern Hemisphere. Lifesavers patrol the beach in season.
