Newcastle Beach is the city beach of Newcastle, New South Wales, a short walk from the Hunter Street mall and the light rail stop of the same name. It runs south from the Newcastle Ocean Baths, an art deco pool complex opened in the 1920s, to the cliffs below King Edward Park, with the Bogey Hole, a convict-cut rock pool, a little further along. The beach faces east to south-east and catches swell readily, breaking over sandbanks along its length and over reef at the southern corner, where a right-hand wave known locally as the Cowrie Hole can work on a big south swell for experienced surfers. It is a busy beach in summer and is patrolled by the surf life saving club; a permanent rip often runs near the rocks at the southern end. Westerly winds blow offshore, and the best surf report tends to come in winter and autumn when westerlies are common in the mornings. Summer north-easterlies blow cross-onshore.
