The Plage de la Grande Mer is the main beach of Cassis, the fishing port east of Marseille, and it sits right below the town between the harbour and the Pointe des Lombards. It is a beach of small pebbles and shingle rather than sand, with clear water that deepens quickly, and above it to the east rises Cap Canaille, the highest sea cliff in France. West of the town begins the Calanques National Park, whose narrow limestone inlets are reached on foot or by the boats that leave from the harbour. Grande Mer faces south and is fairly sheltered from the Mistral by the hills behind, but south-easterly winds push waves straight onto the stones and can make entering the water awkward. It is a swimming and snorkelling beach, busy in July and August; water shoes help on the pebbles. Sea temperature runs from about 13 °C at the end of winter to around 23 °C in August, with cooler spells after strong Mistral days.
