Pointe Rouge is a sandy beach in Marseille's 8th arrondissement, south of the big Prado beaches and next to the small marina that shares its name, at the point where the city gives way to the limestone of the Calanques. It faces west across the bay towards the Frioul islands, and it is the city's best-known windsurfing beach: the Mistral, the cold north-westerly that funnels down the Rhône valley, blows here side-shore and often strong, and on those days the water fills with sails and, further along the coast, kites. On calm summer days it is simply a city beach with shallow water, cafés and a promenade, busy with families and paddleboarders. Mistral days are for experienced riders, because the wind is gusty and, at its most northerly, blows offshore. Sea temperature is about 13 °C in February and around 23 °C in August, though a long Mistral can drop it several degrees by stirring up cold water. The Windy timelapse webcam is a solar camera looking over the beach and the bay, so you can see the state of the sea before you go.
