Labenne Océan is the seaside end of Labenne, a Landes village whose centre lies a few kilometres inland around the Marais d'Orx, a national nature reserve for migrating birds. The Avenue de la Plage runs through the pines and a village of holiday chalets to a beach with a bakery and a small shop near the dune. To the north the same sand continues to Capbreton and Hossegor; to the south it runs on to Ondres. The surf is an exposed Atlantic beach break that works on most westerly swells, with banks that change through the winter, and the wind you want for it is light and from the east, offshore on this west-facing shore. Summer days are small and good for learning; the bigger autumn and winter swells are for experienced surfers only. Strong rip currents form in the channels between the sandbanks, especially around low tide, so in season keep to the supervised zone marked by the flags. Sea temperature is roughly 12 °C at the end of winter and about 22 °C in August.
