Ondres Plage is the beach of Ondres, a small commune in the far south of the Landes, a few kilometres north of Bayonne and the mouth of the Adour. It is a straight run of open Atlantic sand backed by dunes and the pine forest that covers this whole coast, with a car park at the end of the Avenue de la Plage. Like the rest of the Landes shore it is a beach break: the sandbanks move with every big storm, so the peaks shift from one week to the next, and it picks up almost any swell from the west or north-west. Autumn usually brings the cleanest combination of groundswell and light easterly wind, which blows offshore here; in summer the surf is smaller and the beach busier. The other side of that exposure is the baïnes, the channels between the banks that drain the beach on a falling tide and pull swimmers out to sea. Swim only between the flags when the lifeguards are on duty, and treat bigger days as surf for experienced riders. The sea temperature ranges from about 12 °C in February to around 22 °C in late August. We have no webcam for Ondres yet, so the surf forecast and wind table below are the best guide before you go.
