Valras-Plage is a family resort on the Hérault coast of the Languedoc, south of Béziers, built where the river Orb meets the Mediterranean. Its beach is a long, wide stretch of fine sand facing south, part of the almost unbroken line of sand that runs from the Camargue to the Pyrenees, with dunes in places and a seafront promenade in the centre. The water is shallow for a long way out, which makes it good for children, and the two winds that matter here are the Tramontane, a dry north-westerly that blows offshore and flattens the sea, and the marin, a damp south-easterly that blows onshore and brings waves and sometimes rough conditions. On Tramontane days, stay close to the shore with inflatables and paddleboards, because the wind pushes anything floating out to sea. Sea temperature runs from about 12 °C in February to around 23 °C in August.
