Dollymount Strand is the three-mile beach along the seaward side of North Bull Island in Dublin Bay, a sandy island that grew up behind the North Bull Wall in the nineteenth century and is now at the core of the Dublin Bay UNESCO biosphere reserve. Only a few kilometres from the city centre, reached by the wooden bridge from Clontarf or the causeway road from Raheny, it is Dublin's main kitesurfing and windsurfing beach, and on a breezy day the sky above it is full of kites. The beach faces east and south-east into the bay, so winds from the north-east round to the south-east blow onshore or cross-shore and give the best sessions; westerlies are offshore and should be avoided. Dublin Bay has a large tidal range, and at low tide the water retreats a long way across very shallow flats, which suits learners and flat-water riding but means long walks and changing conditions through the tide. Kiting is managed with designated zones, and the island's dunes and salt marsh are protected for their birdlife, so follow the signs and keep to the paths. There is very little swell here. Water temperatures reach about 15 °C in August and fall to around 8 °C in late winter. We have no Dollymount webcam yet; the wind forecast and sea temperature are below.
