Poppit Sands is a broad sandy beach at the mouth of the River Teifi, a mile or two beyond the village of St Dogmaels and the town of Cardigan, on the northern edge of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. It marks the northern end of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which sets off from here on its 186-mile route south and west round the county. The beach faces north across the estuary mouth into Cardigan Bay, with dunes behind it, Cardigan Island visible offshore and the headland of Cemaes Head rising to the west. The estuary is what makes Poppit special and what makes it dangerous: the river channel close to the sand carries strong tidal currents, especially on the ebb, and swimming near it is not safe. Families stick to the shallows and sandbanks away from the channel, and there are lifeguards in the summer holidays and an RNLI lifeboat station at the beach. Light winds and calm seas are best for paddling here; a fresh north-westerly sends in waves and chop. A café and a car park sit behind the dunes. The sea in Cardigan Bay reaches about 16 °C in late summer. The live webcam looks out over the beach and the bay; the wind forecast and sea temperature are below.
