Chirihama is the beach on the west coast of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa where the Chirihama Nagisa Driveway runs for about 8 km along the sand between Imahama in Hodatsushimizu and Chirihama in Hakui. It is the only place in Japan where ordinary cars, motorbikes and even coaches may drive along a beach at the water's edge: the sand grains here are about half the size of normal beach sand, and when soaked with seawater they pack as hard as a paved road. The sand is carried by rivers such as the Tedori and by the Tsushima Current and the north-westerly winter winds, then turned back onto the beach by Cape Takizaki north of Hakui. Since the 1960s the beach has also been a public road for a month in summer, with lanes and speed limits marked out. Erosion has narrowed it, and the driveway is closed in storms; it was closed when the Noto earthquake struck on 1 January 2024. The beach doubles as bathing beaches in summer, and this live camera from Hokuriku Asahi Broadcasting shows the sunset over the Sea of Japan, cars on the sand and the waves. High surf closes the road, so study the wind and wave figures here before you drive onto the sand.
