Mikuni Sunset Beach is the nickname of the Mikuni bathing beach in the old port town of Mikuni, now part of Sakai in Fukui Prefecture, near the mouth of the Kuzuryu River on the Sea of Japan. It is listed among Japan's 100 best sunset spots, and the beach is about 500 metres long and 50 metres wide, shallow enough for children to swim safely in summer. The Mikuni fireworks on 11 August include spectacular underwater fireworks, and a crab festival in November celebrates the start of the snow-crab season at the fish market next door. In winter the Sea of Japan sends big waves onto this coast, and the beach is used for surfing and other water sports; the local operators also run surfing, bodyboarding and SUP lessons and stand-up paddle cruises to the cliffs of Tojinbo, a few kilometres north. This live camera, run by Fukui Cable Television, looks across the beach and the harbour breakwater to the open sea. The Mikuni-Minato terminus of the Echizen Railway is about five minutes on foot.
