Katase Higashihama is the beach directly in front of Enoshima, the small island at the mouth of the Katase River in Fujisawa, Kanagawa, joined to the shore by a bridge of about 390 metres. The sand runs some 560 metres east from the river mouth and continues without a break into Koshigoe beach in Kamakura; because it lies in the lee of the island, the water is usually calm and shallows gently. Erwin Bälz recommended Katase to the Japanese government as a place for sea bathing in 1879, and the village opened a bathing beach here in 1915, so it may be the oldest of its kind in Japan. Few beaches in Japan draw bigger crowds, with around 830,000 visitors in an average season, beach houses from July to August and lifeguards on duty. This webcam, part of HviewCam's Enoshima series, looks along the east beach with the island, the yacht harbour of the 1964 and 2020 Olympic sailing events, and the Miura Peninsula in view. Small surf reaches the beach when a southerly swell runs into Sagami Bay; check the wave and wind forecast here, and arrive by Odakyu, the Enoden or the Shonan Monorail.
