Loreto is a small town on the Sea of Cortez coast of Baja California Sur, and the oldest Spanish settlement in the Californias: the Jesuit mission of Nuestra Señora de Loreto was founded here in 1697, and its church still stands a few streets back from the shore. The waterfront is a malecón with palms, benches and a small harbour inside a breakwater with a lighthouse, and the live cam on this page, from Webcams de México, looks along it and out across the water to the islands. Those islands, Coronado, Carmen, Danzante and others, belong to the Bahía de Loreto National Park, created in 1996, and are the reason most visitors come: kayaking, snorkelling and boat trips among them, and in late winter the chance of seeing blue whales in the bay. There is no ocean swell on this side of the peninsula. Through the winter, though, the northerly wind called El Norte can blow for days and make the crossing to the islands rough, so a calm morning is worth using. The sea is cool in winter, around 19 °C, and very warm by late summer, near 30 °C. The town is a Pueblo Mágico.
