San José del Cabo is the older and quieter of the two towns of Los Cabos, at the eastern end of the coastal corridor that runs about 30 km to Cabo San Lucas. Its hotel zone stretches along a wide, steep beach facing south over the open water where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific, and the live cam on this page, run by Hoteles Solaris from its hotel on the Paseo Malecón, looks over that beach and out to sea. The water here is a different proposition from the bay at Cabo San Lucas: waves break heavily close to the sand, there is a strong backwash, and swimming is often flagged as unsafe, so treat it as a beach for walking and watching rather than bathing. At its eastern end the San José estuary, a freshwater lagoon behind the dunes, is a reserve for birds, and beyond it are La Playita and the Puerto Los Cabos marina. A few kilometres west, Costa Azul is the best-known surf beach on the corridor, at its best with south swell in summer. Humpback whales pass offshore from December to April. Sea temperature runs from around 22 °C in early spring to about 29 °C in September.
