Troncones is a small village on the Costa Grande of Guerrero, about half an hour's drive north-west of Ixtapa, that has become one of the better-known surf towns on Mexico's Pacific coast without growing much. The coast here faces south-west and picks up the long-period south swells of the northern summer, roughly April to October, which is the main surf season; in winter the waves are smaller and the town gets more beginners and visitors who come for the quiet. The surf ranges from beach-break peaks in front of the village to left-hand point waves over rock and reef at the north end, which need more experience and booties at low tide. Mornings are usually glassy, and an onshore sea breeze tends to arrive around midday; winds from the north-east quadrant blow offshore. Sea turtles nest on the beach, and local groups release hatchlings in season.
