Playa Los Muertos is the main beach of Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica, the old part of town south of the Río Cuale, and probably the busiest stretch of sand in the city. Restaurants and bars with tables under umbrellas line the back of the beach, vendors walk the shoreline, and at its northern end the Los Muertos pier reaches out into Banderas Bay, crowned since its rebuilding in 2013 by a tall sail-shaped structure that is lit up at night. Water taxis leave from the pier for the small beaches and villages of the southern bay that have no road, such as Las Ánimas, Quimixto and Yelapa. The beach faces west, and swell entering the bay arrives here small, so most days bring only a modest shorebreak; an afternoon sea breeze usually sets in after lunch. Humpback whales visit Banderas Bay in winter, roughly from December to March. The live cam on this page belongs to El Dorado, one of the beach restaurants, and looks along the sand towards the pier. Water temperature ranges from about 24 °C in February and March to 30 °C in late summer.
