Rockanje is a village on Voorne, the former island at the mouth of the Rhine and Maas in South Holland, south of the Maasvlakte port extension of Rotterdam. Its beach is a broad, quiet stretch of sand in front of the dunes of the Voornes Duin nature reserve, reached by beach entrances that the locals call the first, second and third slag. The live webcam looks from the beach entrance over the sand and the sea. Because the beach lies in the angle between the Maasvlakte and the Haringvliet sluices, the water in front of it is shallower and calmer than on the open Holland coast further north, and the gently shelving sand makes it a favourite family beach in summer, with lifeguards at the main entrance. The beach faces west-north-west, so westerly and north-westerly winds blow onshore and bring wind waves, and on those days kitesurfers use the wide sand outside the swimming zones; easterly winds are offshore. Sandbars appear at low tide, and the tidal current can pull along the beach, so keep an eye on children in the water. Cycle paths connect the beach with the village and the dunes.
