Ouddorp is a village at the western end of Goeree-Overflakkee in South Holland, and its long North Sea beach runs north-east from the Brouwersdam, the dam that closed off the Grevelingen estuary, towards the dunes and the Westhoofd lighthouse. The beach is wide and sandy, backed by dunes that are part of a protected nature area, and reached by several beach entrances with car parks and pavilions. Facing north-west, it is open to the westerly and north-westerly winds that bring waves in from the North Sea, and on those days surfers and kitesurfers use the beach, while the nearby Brouwersdam, one of the best-known kite and windsurf spots in the Netherlands, offers flat water on its lake side. Easterly and south-easterly winds blow offshore here and are not safe for kiting. Rip currents can form between the sandbanks, and swimming is safest at the lifeguarded entrances in summer. The village itself, with its holiday parks and campsites, fills up in the summer holidays, while spring and autumn are quiet and windy. Sea temperature is at its highest in August.
