Wainui Beach is a long, east-facing surf beach about five kilometres north-east of Gisborne, on the East Cape of New Zealand's North Island, and the most consistent beach break in the Gisborne area. Gisborne is often described as the first city in the world to see the sunrise each day, and its coast has a deep surfing culture; Wainui has produced several of New Zealand's best-known surfers. The beach is exposed to swell from the north-east round to the south-east, and its banks offer a choice of peaks along several kilometres of sand, from the stream mouth at the southern end to the Stock Route and Pines areas further north. The waves can be powerful, with heavy shore break on bigger days, so the beach is best for confident surfers when the swell is up, while smaller days suit all levels. North-westerly and westerly winds blow offshore, and the Gisborne region's sunny, dry climate brings plenty of them. The Wainui surf life saving club patrols in summer. Water temperatures range from about 13 °C in winter to 20 °C in summer. The Wainui surf report below shows today's swell, wind and water temperature.
