Pāpāmoa Beach is a long, straight, north-facing beach on the Bay of Plenty coast, stretching east from Mount Maunganui for more than 15 kilometres past the growing suburbs of Pāpāmoa towards Maketū. Its fine golden sand and gently shelving shore make it a popular family beach, and the Pāpāmoa surf life saving club patrols a section of it in summer. The beach picks up swell from the north and north-east, so the surf is generally smaller and less consistent than on the west coast; it tends to work best when an easterly or north-easterly swell arrives, including the occasional tropical cyclone swell in late summer, and the beach-break peaks then suit beginners and intermediate surfers. Southerly winds blow offshore, typically in the mornings. The long, open beach with few obstacles is also used by kitesurfers, particularly in onshore and cross-shore north-easterly and easterly winds; riders should keep well away from swimmers and patrolled areas. Mauao, the volcanic cone of Mount Maunganui, is visible at the western end. Water temperatures range from about 14 to 21 °C.
