Gonubie is a small beach town on the Eastern Cape coast, roughly 18 km north-east of East London (now officially KuGompo City), where the Gqunube River meets the Indian Ocean. The river gave the town its name, which is said to come from Khoekhoe and to mean "bramble river". Its main beach is a wide stretch of sand backed by a boardwalk, and it held Blue Flag status in the 2010/11 season. The live webcam, run by the Gonubie Beach Webcam channel, looks out from above the sand across the surf line towards a headland further up the coast, so you can see the size and shape of the sets, how many people are on the beach and whether the haze has lifted before you drive over. Waves break along the beach most days, and the sheltered river behind it is used for canoeing and kayaking, which also makes it an easy place to try stand-up paddling on flat water. Gonubie is mostly a residential suburb these days, with many people commuting to East London, so the beach is busiest at weekends and in the school holidays. Getting there is simple: leave the N2 at exit 1054 and follow Main Road (M10) through town to the beachfront.
