Exmouth Beach stretches for about two miles along the south Devon coast, from the mouth of the River Exe eastwards to the red sandstone of Orcombe Point, where the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site begins. A long Victorian-era seafront runs behind it, with cafés, the lifeboat station and parking, and the sandy beach shelves gently into Lyme Bay. Exmouth is one of the best-known kitesurfing spots on the English south coast. The open beach is ridden in south-westerly to south-easterly winds, while inside the estuary the sandbanks create flat water at the right states of tide; the estuary mouth, though, has very strong tidal streams and a shifting bar, and is no place for anyone who is not confident. Beach users, swimmers and kiters share the space, so check any local kite zones and seasonal rules before launching. Surf is rare and small here, because the beach faces south and the Atlantic swell has to wrap a long way to reach it. Across the estuary lies Dawlish Warren.
