East Sands is the smaller of the two beaches of St Andrews in Fife, lying just east of the harbour and below the ruins of the medieval cathedral, while the famous West Sands, of Chariots of Fire fame, runs north beside the golf links. East Sands is a sheltered, east-facing crescent of sand backed by a promenade, the university's Scottish Oceans Institute and a leisure centre, and it is the home of the St Andrews sailing club, whose camera provides the live view on this page. It is a popular beach for families, dog walkers, open-water swimmers and paddlers, and when an easterly or north-easterly swell runs down the North Sea it also gets surfable waves, with a westerly wind blowing offshore. At low tide a wide area of sand and rock is exposed and rock pools appear towards the harbour; the coastal path heads east along the shore towards Kingsbarns. Parking is available along the shore road. The sea off Fife is among the colder bathing waters in Britain, reaching only about 13–14 °C in August and falling to about 6 °C in late winter.
