East Strand is the long beach that runs east from the seaside town of Portrush on the Causeway Coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, for around two miles towards the white limestone cliffs at Whiterocks. Behind it rise the dunes of the Royal Portrush golf links, host of the Open Championship in 2019 and 2025, and offshore lie the low islands of the Skerries, which partly shelter the bay. Portrush is the centre of surfing in Northern Ireland, with surf shops and schools in town; East Strand faces north into the Atlantic and picks up swells from the north-west round to the north-east, with a southerly wind blowing offshore. The beach break is generally friendlier than the reefs further along the coast, which makes it a good place to learn, though rips form near the rocks and the shelving sand at the town end. Lifeguards cover the beach in the summer season, and there are car parks and a promenade at the Portrush end; West Strand, on the other side of the town's peninsula, works on different winds.
