Bahia Honda State Park covers most of Bahia Honda Key in the Lower Keys, about 12 miles west of Marathon on the Overseas Highway, and its beaches are often called the best in the Florida Keys. The park's landmark is the old Bahia Honda Bridge, a steel truss built for Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad and later used for the first highway, with a section removed so boats can pass. This live beach cam from FloridaKeysTV looks over the park's water from the Big Pine Key end of the island. The beaches are Sandspur Beach on the Atlantic side and Calusa Beach and Loggerhead Beach near the bridge, all with shallow, clear water over sand and seagrass. The reef offshore keeps swell away, so this is a place for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking; the channel under the bridges has strong tidal currents and is not a place to swim. Hurricane Irma damaged the park badly in 2017 and parts of it reopened in stages. Water temperature ranges from about 22 °C in winter to above 30 °C in summer. The park charges a per-vehicle entry fee and is busiest on winter and spring weekends.
