Islamorada is the village that stretches across the Upper Keys from Plantation Key to Lower Matecumbe Key, and it calls itself the Sportfishing Capital of the World for its backcountry flats, the reef and the Gulf Stream a few miles offshore. This live cam is run by the Islander Resort on Upper Matecumbe Key and looks from the resort's grounds out over the Atlantic side. Like most of the Keys, Islamorada has little natural beach: the shoreline is mostly coral rock, mangroves and small man-made sand areas, and the reef several miles out breaks the ocean swell, so the water near shore is shallow, clear and usually calm. That makes it a good place to watch the color of the water and the strength of the trade winds before a day of fishing, snorkeling, kayaking or paddleboarding. The wind is usually from the east or southeast, stronger in winter and spring. Water temperature runs from about 22 °C in January to more than 30 °C in late summer. Nearby public spots include Anne's Beach on Lower Matecumbe and Founders Park on Plantation Key. Hurricane season runs from June to November.
