Spot info

  • Town: Brooklyn, New York City

Coney Island, at the southern tip of Brooklyn, is New York City's most famous beach: almost three miles of sand along the Riegelmann Boardwalk, with the subway running straight to it and the amusement district of Luna Park, the wooden Cyclone roller coaster of 1927, the Wonder Wheel and the disused Parachute Jump tower behind. The beach faces south onto the Lower New York Bay and the Atlantic, so it is mostly sheltered and gentle, with rock jetties every few hundred metres dividing it into bays. NYC Parks lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day weekend to early September, and swimming is only allowed when they are; outside the season the water is officially closed, though the hardy Polar Bear Club swims every winter Sunday and thousands join the New Year's Day plunge. The live cam on this page is EarthCam's Coney Island stream, high above the amusement parks with the boardwalk, beach and ocean beyond. Summer weekends bring huge crowds, the Mermaid Parade in June and the Nathan's hot dog contest on the Fourth of July. Water quality can drop after heavy rain. The bay is about 4 °C in February and 23 °C in August.
