Coopers Beach is the main ocean beach of the Village of Southampton, at the end of the lanes that run south from the village to Meadow Lane and the dunes. It is a wide, pale-sand Atlantic beach backed by some of the most expensive houses in the Hamptons, and in 2010 coastal scientist Stephen Leatherman named it the best beach in the United States. In summer the village runs a pavilion with a snack bar, showers, chair and umbrella rentals and lifeguards, and parking is by village permit or a steep daily fee, so many visitors cycle in. The live cam on this page is Hamptons.com's Coopers Beach stream, looking over the sand and the guarded swimming area. The beach faces south-south-east onto the open Atlantic: summer days are usually gentle, with small waves and a south-west breeze in the afternoon, while hurricane swells in late summer and autumn and winter nor'easters can bring big surf, steep shorebreak and strong rip currents. Swimming is safest in front of the lifeguard stands. The beach is quieter before nine and after five, and the dunes are protected, so stick to the marked paths. The ocean is around 4 °C in February and 22 °C in August.
