Flying Point Beach is a Town of Southampton ocean beach in Water Mill, at the end of Flying Point Road on the south shore of Long Island's East End. It sits on a narrow spit between the Atlantic and Mecox Bay, the shallow coastal pond to the east whose cut to the ocean is opened from time to time, and the bay side is a good place for paddling and for small sailboats on calm days. This live beach cam from Hamptons.com looks across the ocean beach. The shore faces south-southeast and picks up the same swells as the rest of the Hamptons: hurricanes and tropical storms in late summer and fall, nor'easters in winter, and short southerly wind swell in summer. Flying Point is known locally as a surf beach; north and northwest winds are offshore. When the Mecox cut is open, the outflow can build sandbars and also strong currents near the opening, so stay well away from it. Lifeguards are on duty in the summer season, and parking needs a Southampton permit or a daily fee. The water reaches about 21 to 24 °C in August and is near 5 °C in February.
