Spot info
- Town: Margate City, Atlantic County
- Water: Sea
- Sports: SUP
Margate City is a shore town on Absecon Island in southern New Jersey, between Ventnor and Longport, a few miles south of Atlantic City. It is best known for Lucy the Elephant, a six-story wooden elephant built in 1881 that stands near the beach on Atlantic Avenue and is now a National Historic Landmark. This live cam is mounted at 9600 Atlantic Avenue, a short walk from Lucy, and gives a panoramic view of the beach looking north toward the Atlantic City skyline. Margate's beach is a broad, east-facing strip of sand with jetties at the ends of many streets; it has no boardwalk, which keeps the town quieter than its neighbors. The Atlantic here picks up swell from nor'easters and from hurricanes passing offshore, and the jetties shape small peaks that local surfers ride, with some beaches set aside for surfing in summer; northwest winds are offshore. Lifeguards are on duty from mid-June to Labor Day, and beach tags are required in that season. Rip currents next to the jetties are the main hazard. Water temperature goes from about 4 °C in February to around 23 °C in August, so a wetsuit is needed most of the year.
