Spot info
- Town: Cape May, Cape May County
- Water: Sea
- Sports: SUP
Cape May sits at the southern tip of New Jersey, where Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic, and the whole town is a National Historic Landmark thanks to its streets of painted Victorian houses. The Cove is the beach at the western end of the Beach Avenue promenade, beside a long rock jetty, with the Cape May Lighthouse visible across the dunes to the west. Because this coast faces south rather than east, it picks up south swells that miss most of the Jersey Shore, and the Cove and the beaches along the promenade are the town's designated surfing beaches, with sandbars shaped by a series of jetties. Summer is usually small and gentle, while autumn hurricanes and winter storms bring proper waves; northerly winds blow offshore. The live cam on this page, published by Jim Ginn, looks over the Cove beach and dunes with the lighthouse in view. Dolphins are often seen just offshore in summer, and the area is famous for bird migration in autumn. Beach tags are required on the guarded beaches from June to September, and swimming should stay near the lifeguard stands, as rip currents form along the jetties. The water is about 4 °C in February and 24 °C in August.
